Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Adult BJJ

Do I need experience to start?
No. Most adult students start with no prior martial arts experience. Classes are structured to introduce fundamentals from day one, regardless of background.
Do I need to be in shape to start?
No. Conditioning is built through training, not required to begin it. Classes meet students where they are — and the training itself will improve your strength, mobility, and endurance over time.
What's the difference between gi and no-gi?
Gi training uses a traditional uniform that’s used as part of the grappling. No-gi uses shorts and a rashguard, with grappling based on body control rather than fabric grips. Both are taught at Miller, and most serious students train both.
Will I have to spar on my first day?
No. Sparring (or "live training") is introduced once students have built the foundation and control to do it safely. Beginners aren’t thrown into hard sparring on day one.
Can I train if I have an old injury?
In most cases, yes. Many students train with managed limitations. Mention any concerns when you book your first class so we can talk through it together.
